Information:
Die lavierte Federzeichnung zeigt eine eher selten dargestellte alttestamentarische Szene (Richter 6, 21): Dem jungen Gideon erschien beim Korndreschen ein Engel, der ihn beauftragte, Israel zu erretten. Als Gideon um ein Zeichen Gottes bat, entzündete sich das dargebrachte Opfer und der Engel verschwand. Die Darstellung wurde von van den Eeckhout in einer weiteren Zeichnung (Inv. Nr. Z 242) variiert und in mehreren Gemälden aufgegriffen; beeinflusst wurde die Komposition durch Werke von Ferdinand Bol mit demselben Thema. Beide Künstler waren von 1635 bis 1640/41 in Rembrandts Werkstatt tätig, wo diese Arbeiten möglicherweise in einem künstlerischen Wettstreit entstanden. Der bemerkenswerte, individuelle Zeichenstil mit seiner "ornamentalen Verspieltheit" wird durch vielfältige Lavierungen bereichert, so dass sich ein äußerst malerischer Gesamteindruck ergibt.
