Inhalt

Beschreibung:: Der Hofkupferstecher Carl Schröder d. Ä. (1760-1844) kopierte in der Herzoglichen Gemäldegalerie in Salzdahlum und später in Braunschweig insgesamt 31 Gemälde, wobei er von einigen Werken mehrere Varianten anfertigte. So etwa von dem Gemälde "Das Opfer Abrahams" von Jan Lievens. Innerhalb der einzelnen Varianten gibt es wiederum technische Abweichungen oder Abzüge vor Hinzufügen der Schrift ("avant la lettre"). Die Druckgraphiken sind von Schröder entweder als Radierungen oder als Schabkunstblätter gestochen worden. Schröder beherrschte die Technik der Schabkunst (auch: Mezzotinto, Schwarzkunst oder manière anglaise) besonders virtuos. Die Kopien, die Schröder nach Werken aus der herzoglichen Gemäldegalerie anfertigte, sind auch deshalb von so großer Bedeutung, weil vier der kopierten Gemälde spätestens seit dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts als verschollen gelten. Dabei handelt es sich um die Werke: "Bildnis eines unbekannten Mannes", das laut Vasel Philips de Koninck zugeschrieben wurde, "Pomona" von Augustin Terwesten, "Die büßende Magdalena" von Adriaen van der Werff und "Die Neuvermählte, welche unter Tränen und mit Dudelsack-Musik zum Hochzeitsbette geführt wird" nach einem unbekannten Meister.
