Information zum Ort:
Das kleine Dörfchen wird 1071 erstmals als "Stahla" erwähnt. Weitere Nennungen: 1350 Schala, 1462 Schale, 1512 Schalla, 1743 Schala. Der Name kommt aus dem Slawischen und bedeutet Schlucht, Höhle, auch Nebenarm eines Flusses. 
Das reichliche Wasserdargebot des Schaalbaches konnte von mehreren Mühlen genutzt werden.
(Heute ist Schaala ein Ortsteil der Stadt Rudolstadt.)
