Der Spaltkeil besteht aus einem hohlen Eisenkeil mit einem eingepassten Hartholzkeil mit rundem Schaft. Am oberen Ende war ein Schlagring befestigt.
Die Holzeinsätze dienen in den hohlen Eisenkeilen dazu, den Verschleiß zu vermindern.
Der Spaltkeil wird mit dem Spalthammer in das Holz eingetrieben.
